Once upon a time Carlsbad was a sleepy little beachside town, but now big money is taking over. Here’s a tour of projects being discussed on the street:

Hate it!
Hey JtR- I am active in the Village and a couple of interesting things;
1.) 4 story is currently allowed, up to 45′, has been for over a decade, (I think since 1996).
2.) The Coastal Zone ends at the railroad tracks for most of the Village except for a peninsula that goes a 1/2 block to either side of Carlsbad Village Drive up to Harding. So if the next incarnation of SB50 is ever approved it would directly apply to the Village, (though I doubt this will happen, but I think this hysteria about a housing crisis will ease).
3.) The Antique Mall is in escrow too.
I think the Village is the right place for development; walkable, there is a train station, you really don’t need a car. It’s getting way better. That ice cream shop used to be a guns & ammo dealer!
Maybe they don’t need 4 story but if we’re going to have development then let’s do it in places that are already developed and not create more sprawl and traffic.
bring it on!!! I hate the Village anyway.
Just don’t touch Pizza Port!!!
yes, need to close off the cross streets to traffic and make it pedistrian friendly.
One question: where on earth are people going to park? All that pedestrian mall is well and good, but how will people get there? Sure they’ll add a few thousand super expensive condos and those people will have a nice pedestrian beach vibe. But no way they add enough parking to support that many new units.
If they expect businesses to make it people have to park somewhere. And train? You’ve got to be joking. I live in Carlsbad, so I’m supposed to what, take the train from Poinsettia to Downtown Carlsbad? All that open parking at the Windmill is starting to look mighty nice, as is Pizza Port Bressi.
One question: where on earth are people going to park?
The long-timers will walk down from the hills, but once they’re gone, maybe bikes and skateboards? 🙂
Thanks for the tour of the Village, Jim. Any idea what’s going on with the couple of lots on the south west corner of CVD and Washington street? Near Grubbys.
I think these new mega-boxes built right up to the sidewalk are a blight. The eclectic village beach look will be destroyed and it’ll be just another Los Angeles. The carpet baggers will then flee with their loot and we’ll have lost what can never be regained. Crying shame…
all of these condos will be AirBnBs…..so yeah, the Village is lost.
If I need to go into the Village during travel season I always take an Uber. Otherwise, I just avoid it between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Ok good – I still have a couple of days left.
