Tom,
Awesome find! Congrats on the new location.
One thing that keeps the look Craftsman homes best is double hung widows. You can get simulations that have the look but use modern materials.
I was in the UK last month and in London you’re not allowed to replace old double hung windows. When I got outside of the city in the smaller towns people had replaced their windows with modern sliders and the houses just didn’t look right. Another odd thing I noticed is that in London nobody had screens on their windows. I don’t know why they did that.
@Shadash, an almost complete lack of annoying insect life desirous of invading their homes! And your right, a 300 year old cottage with modern windows just doesnt look right.
Tom, Not to worry…the link below solves your garage problem and adds instant property appeal when it comes time to sell. Alongside the car-lift area of the garage, simply pop-out some of the wall as a shed-roof for, say, 48″. Install cabinets and counter in this area.
You can use a hip roof and avoid the cross-joists- or use tie-rods in a couple of strategic areas to tie the two long walls. Your total building height may only be four additional feet.
Bingo, two cars in a one-car garage. Please see link:

Is there a way to invest in Tom’s projects? Are you willing to entertain investors?
@Shadash
There are no screens on the windows because that would keep Peter Pan and the lost boys from coming in at night.
Sheesh…..I would have thought you knew that!
Tom in the video:
“…as soon as I finish up with the current project I’m on right now, I will hopefully be able to roll right over here and build me a new bungalow..”
No pressure, Jim.
What a great lot! I would do a single wide tandem garage…they count as a 2-car for appraisals. Most people use the second garage space for storage anyway, so single wide isn’t much of an issue.
Can’t wait to see this go up. What is the address?
Very cool how you purchased it, just look up the owner in tax records, make offer.
Lot prices are interesting, even more volatile than home prices. Out here in Lakeside lot prices are getting to essentially zero. Nearby to my house there is a 0.6 acre lot listed for 30k. Pencil it out and it makes sense. To build brand new 2000 sf at say $150/sf is $300k, add $50k for permits and fees, $50k profit, comp at $400k, leaves zero for lot value. I’m sure there are speculators picking up lots for pennies. Property tax holding cost is around 1% a year. Not too bad if you think prices are going to come back. Permits and fees and building requirements get stiffer and more expensive every year so you have to consider that too.
Sorry, I’m not broadcasting the address because I don’t want looky-loo’s on the job site all summer. I know you understand; )
Im ready to head on down to south park and see some friends of mine
