I know of no one (in my personal circle) who grew up in SoCal that moved away from the SoCal area and had not regretted it (with the possible exception of the guy who retired in Maui, I have not heard back from him, I guess he does not want to be bothered LOL).
If you want to feel better about San Diego pricing, just start shopping for homes in the nicer parts of the Bay Area… yikes.
At least with San Diego, you actually feel like you’re getting what you pay for!

Don’t know how accurate this list is but I don’t want to move to Oklahoma City LOL.
I think actually SoCal gets a bad rap for being expensive to live.
A. As long as you are a professional you are probably making a lot more than you would have in a lower cost of living area.
B. If you don’t have MR and HOA fee’s then your annual housing expenses are considerably less (in most cases).
C. Thanks to prop 13 as long as you buy young and never sell, retiring in SoCal will most likely be a lot cheaper than even some of the so called lower cost of living area’s (much to the chagrin of a lot of realtors I am sure LOL). (the longer you stay the cheaper it is).

This is paradise if you moved here in the 1970s or 80s and haven’t moved.
If you moved here and bought in 2006 in an inferior location and are stuck with it, well…not exactly paradise.
Buying in 1989 was no picnic either LOL, took everything I had at the time.
But now look recklessly cheap.

But if you are in an inferior area, the timeline is longer and discomfort higher if you really need to move. There are still plenty of areas around the county at -20% off peak prices.
From my observations and experiences in California even in a lot of those (currently) inferior locations will seem like bargains in 15 years IMO.
