    From the U-T:

San Diegans, have you paid your 2010-11 property taxes?

If you haven’t, then expect a default notice from the San Diego County Treasurer/Tax Collector’s Office. This applies to taxpayers who have failed to pay their first, second or both installments.

The notice will reflect a 10 percent penalty added to each unpaid installment and an additional 1.5 percent a month penalty, or 18 percent per year. Penalties will accrue until the bill is paid in full.

Dan McAllister, the county treasurer/tax collector, said 30,638 taxpayers are in default, owing a total of $206,505,796.

McAllister said his office is sending out 9,000 fewer notices this year compared to last year, “which is a positive indication that our economy may be improving.”

State law says the treasurer/tax collector can sell any or all parts of properties that have been in default for five years.

In September the county mailed 984,489 property tax bills, and the expected collection from those bills is $4.445 billion.
