IMHO “nice place to visit but…” Not urban vibe, not rural relaxed. Some vague in between.
That said, with major airport access semi-retirement the region can work as a home base for extensive travelers. Eh, I got Burbank and LAX. Hawaii, NYC 7 Philly, Scotland.
San Diego is the same. You can go to the greatest places in the world and still be happy to be home.

I spent time in NC when the kids were stationed at Cherry Point and Greenesboro. It’s a lovely place full of friendly people. I told them if they chose to settle there, we would relocate. Sure, the summer humidity isn’t optimal, but there are so many other factors that make it a great place to live, including beach access.
Tell my niece and her husband “Hello!”
