You’re absolutely right — SD traffic doesn’t hold a candle to L.A.
56 & 15 and then ocean?
Three cheers for Transnet and SANDAG. Everyone has complaints, but loving the pace of improvements, the new SR-52, I-15 express lanes, looking forward to the I-5 express lanes. The South Bay Expressway toll part of of SR-125 is now owned by SANDAG too, and they plan to reduce the tolls, should further help.
In my experience, 6am-8am is the heavy time.
Isn’t the Monday after Super Bowl an unofficial holiday? Traffic was light all day on Monday. Can you run this test again? 🙂
The 56 thins out at Carmel Valley Road (where the video starts, I believe), but can be heavy from the 805/5 merge north to the 56 and the first few exists (Carmel Creek and Carmel Country) off the 56. I was in that traffic Monday at 5:30pmish and it was heavier than the traffic you were in (which is more east). Also, the 5 north is a bear once you get past the 56, so that can be a tiresome commute. I much prefer going east than north from the CV area.
I do this commute everyday, because I live where 56 and 15 meet and work in Mira Mesa off the 805. I get in to work around 7:30 via the 56 to 805 to Mira Mesa blvd most days, but in all honesty 15 to Mira Mesa all the way to the 805 is very fast in the morning for some reason (it’s a nightmare in the evening).
If I leave around 4:30 pm than 56 isn’t all that bad. The nice part about 56, is that it’s heavy but only last a few miles at most. If I leave later than that until about 6:00pm it’s faster just to take Miramar to 15. All said and done I have a 20 minute commute to work and a 30 minute commute to home in Penasquitos (where the 56 and 15 meet up).
Of course, any holiday makes the traffic super light so no worries on those days.
Westbound SR56 at the on ramp from Carmel Valley road tends to get congested every weekday morning starting at around 7:20AM.
The problem to me seemed to be the on-ramp length isn’t as long as the other entrance ramps on westbound SR56 making it difficult for two entering cars per green ramp light to both get up to speed and merge without disrupting rush hour traffic.
I talked to CalTrans about it, suggesting they try one car per green light. They said I didn’t know what I was talking about and the problem was 56 needed additional traffic lanes. Insert military industrial complex analogy here.
