Tom T’s house will definitely bring up the neighborhood.
A good way to check out a ‘hood is the crime maps:

This neighborhood was a war zone in the 80’s but bit-by-bit things have improved. First, community policing and then drug sweeps with 3-Strikes as a sweetener. The improving economy of the early 2000’s helped surrounding east village and Golden Hill across the 94. The next economic upturn will begin to incorporate Sherman Hill/Grant Hill and Barrio Logan due to the fact that they’re not making bayside real estate anymore. Plus, it’s very convenient to work centers. BTW, The park is one of the best places to watch fireworks!
