The website that provides us contemporary homes from around the world is featuring one right in our backyard – on the corner of Prospect and Exchange as you drive into downtown La Jolla.
This 7,200 square-foot lot was an abandoned brown-field site, vacant since 1992. The architect/owner used the space to build a private, urban residence for his family with an on-site architecture studio.
The main living area is surrounded by a reflecting pool on one side and a glass floor on the other. Below grade, where the office and recreation facilities reside, the glass floor/ceiling liberates the space and allows ample natural light.

This house was also written up in Dwell magazine, which can be a fun read if you like modern architecture.

They cover houses around the world, and there are some other La Jolla and San Diego houses they have written up, but I did not search for all the links.
Johnathan Segal is one of the many new architects who got sick of designing “Taco-Tecture” houses for clients and decided to do their own things. Kudos to him.
Not same class of contemporary but here is one in my back yard, Vista of all places!

Jim,
Are you on Google+?
No.
What do you think of it?
Jim:
Striking house…with all the warmth and charm of a German airport terminal!
This may be an example of great architectural design, but I wonder how wide a market it would appeal to. Seems to fit right in with the Spanish tile roof house next door!
I like the exterior of this, not so much the interior.
Beautiful, but may be hard to live in.
@dd… I’m guessing a wide market.
The cool charm, a la Frankfurt airport, is part of the intent. Contempo stuff isn’t meant to be as warm and cuddly feeling as country style. I’m not a big fan of contempo, but I see the appeal to this one.
awesome. wish we saw more design like this.
“Taco-Tecture”… HA! so true. KUDOS to JS for doin’ it right.
this was his house. he now lives on the top floor of his very own brand new highrise building in Little Italy. looks like he did something right, eh? – maybe no-compromise design had something to do with it ??????????
The exterior doesn’t really grab me but that interior design is wonderful. I could spend all my time in that place. I love that fire appliance in the backyard too.
