Who was the person that was with you at the beginning of the video?

It’s nice that the mechanic correctly diagnosed your truck’s problem within a few seconds.

Isn’t this clip like eating desert before dinner?

Congrats on finding a good mechanic, though. They are more useful that a good real estate salesman!

He was a client looking at homes to buy in Vista.

The best deal that we saw in North Vista was a 3-year old, 3,764sf bank-owned house on a half-acre with decent view for $620,017.

Schools don’t test very well, but good country living otherwise.

It’s a good thing my stitches have healed or else you’d be looking at a serious lawsuit (kidding).

Yup, good mechanic. The only thing missing was “Hey, mister how much do you want? As is. Cash.” I guess $689 repair only but you correctly agree to both heads, resurfaced and retorqued for $1100.

  6. Kwaping

Which puts the repair at about 5X the value of the truck. 🙂

Dang, his quote was $720 – am I getting ripped off?

He wasn’t jumping at the chance to do a value job, he said he’d check it out first. My radiator was turning a little green, so he’s going to run it over to the shop, and probably end up with a new core, or just a good cleaning.

Easy kwaping, I paid a whopping $700 for that truck, including the 350 V-8 out of a Corvette with a turbo 400.

But all this time I thought it was a 3/4-ton, and he said it’s only a 1/2-ton, even though it’s got the heavier suspension. Did I overpay? I couldn’t find it in Blue Book.

About the Shadow Inventory, I heard someone that spoke to Countrywide about a house owned by the bank. They said that the bank said that they were going to wait a year put it back on the market..

Is that what’s happening to all the bank owned properties…

I don’t think we’ll ever know if they are holding back deliberately, or just buried with work and can’t move any faster.

    Let’s call it deliberate chaos?

    Jim,
You have to think cultural significance. How much would the “Sanford & Son” truck sell for on eBay? My $689 was pot on. Do I win a cup of coffee? I bet you can tell him to take as long as he wants and within three weeks it is back for 5 large. That’s 5 large auto mechanic not 5 large realtor dollars. That or you can offer him add space in exchange for a discount.

ynaught1 left this on the youtube comments, which was my thought too – the minute George went to smell the exhaust, it was obvious that he knows what he is doing:

    He’s your guy.
Smells the exhaust for burning oil or antifreeze smell

Two seconds after poping the hood…
Is it overheating? boom = new head gasket…worth the drive awesome!!

    Jim –
You are giving away all the prime locations we scouted in “rural” Vista. I’m from Kansas and I haven’t seen chicken coops like some in Vista. I was expecting a banjo duel.
Anyway.. Got back to KC and it is raining again.
    Thanks –
    Todd

Decent house & view, but pretty small yard for a 1/2 acre property.

BTW, you’re not Earl Scheib’ing that thing because you’re afraid someone will steal it then, right? 😉

My 70 CST/10 had fat springs, too. Must’ve been some kind of heavy duty option on the half-tons.

  15. Chrisg

This video was solid. I love that truck.

Can you post the details for George? I’ve been looking for a good mechanic. That was absolutely ridiculous how quickly he diagnosed the problem.

  16. CA renter

Yep, that is one cool truck, Jim! 🙂

Glad to see you’re taking care of her.

  17. timd

what do you look for in the mechanics’ office?

  18. oh brother

Dang that was funny. I bought a half ton with heavy duty suspension from the Vista Irrigation District in bright utility company orange back in the 80s for a grand. Chevy 350 all vinyl inside. A total hose out. I used it for years and STILL got a grand out of it. I was remorseful over selling it. He still has it. I should try to buy it back….for a grand.
