Chelsea’s Law

When the tragedy occured, I said I would follow-up with ways we can contribute. From the U-T:

The legislation inspired by murdered Poway teenager Chelsea King will probably be considered by the Assembly next week after the Appropriations Committee approved the measure Friday.

Volunteers from the Chelsea’s Light Foundation will be collecting signatures TODAY from 10am to 1pm to support the proposed “Chelsea’s Law” at more than 140 sites statewide, including 80 locations in San Diego County.  The goal is to collect 20,000 signatures.

For a partial list of sites, view an interactive map at uniontrib.com/chelsea-map/

Tracking people is a slippery slope. What happened to Chelsea was beyond terrible and my heart goes out to all who cared about her, but legislation in the wake of a tragedy is dangerous.

I realize that if I had daughters I may feel differently.

I have extremely controversial opinions on this subject that are not suitable for a real estate blog, so I’ll refrain from further comment beyond that this law will not do one thing to stop a serious predator.

I have daughters. This law won’t hurt them so pass it. Then vote out the wimpy legislators who refuse to lock these predators away for life.

Then be sure they are in general population (not the isolated protected wing they are now kept in) where their new prison “friends” will ensure them an early exit from prison…toes up.

Keeping them off the streets and out of our neighborhoods will ensure their presence doesn’t hurt local property values…now my comment is real estate related.

Either we should have the fortitude to give them the death sentence ourselves or not. Leaving justice up to the other prisoners is hardly the ideal way to do it.

Agreed, but we all know that the death penalty will never be put into use in a manner effective enough to matter.

Waste of the state’s limited budget. While a horrible tragedy that I felt very deeply having grown up playing in that park, passing knee-jerk legislation isn’t the answer. They found the predator without the use of tracking, and knowing where predators are doesn’t prevent them from actually commiting further crimes.

And, for all of you arguing for the D.P. for pedophiles, read up on the Supreme Court’s long list of cases on when it is and is not constitutional. One thing I don’t miss about San Diego is the reactionary politics.
