My mother was born on July 4, 1934 – today is her 80th birthday!
Last Friday we took her on a tour of the neighborhood where she grew upĀ (Oakland and Piedmont, California) and saw the houses and schools that were a vital part of her upbringing.
Along the way, she offered up this nugget of real estate strategy that my grandmother used on my grandfather – and it worked!
Happy 4th of July!
Best wishes to you & your Mom, Jim!
Happy B Day to mom. I was born in the Oakland Kaiser hospital and grew up in the Easter Ave housing project from 1960 to 1978.
I was born at Merritt Hospital in Oakland!
Late to the party, Jim. Happy 80th to your mom! I was born @ Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and was 2 1/2 months premature. Lived in the same house in the East Bay (Orinda) from the age of 3 until I went to college. My parents had the home custom built. It was a perfect childhood.
My parents sold it when my sister & I were still in college. It was on 1/3 acre with a pool and the agent didn’t think my parents would get the $80K my dad insisted on. Today, that home is worth $1.2 – $1.5 million, and the present owners bought it for $625K in 1998. I heard it had been sold, wrote the new owners a letter explaining I hadn’t seen it since 1972, and was in the area for a Christmas family visit. They invited us for a visit and we still keep in touch today. My sister got to see it for the first time in decades a couple years ago.
So much fun to revisit your childhood…
