There has been vocal opposition to the Nordstrom development proposed for Carlsbad, and it’s only right that people have a chance to review the project. Here is your chance:
A group supporting a proposal to create a 26-acre development near Agua Hedionda Lagoon is inviting Carlsbad residents to learn more.
Open space tours will be held July 18, Aug. 1 and Aug. 15 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. so that attendees can learn more about the “85/15 Plan.”
Onsite transportation, food and drinks will be provided.
Tours start at the Carlsbad Strawberry Company parking lot, located at 1050 Cannon Road. Interested attendees can sign up at www.openspacetherightway.com/tours/.
I can’t wait for this to happen and I live 10 minutes form the proposed site. Jobs, New Businesses, Tax revenues, Higher class shopping and restaurants. What’s not to like?
ANYTHING is better than Stabby-mcGangland Mall aka Westfield Carlsbad. It amazes me to this day that Westfield let another Mall into the area, all they had to do was renovate/update. Maybe in 10 years we can buy Westfield Carlsbad back from the Westfield group for pennies and turn it into sports park or stadium.
The whole development process is so bizarre.
For the record, I am very much in support of Caruso’s project. The Mrs. couldn’t be more excited about a Nordstroms right down the street.

However, it so obvious that Caruso’s initiative/petition is pure deception. I am not keen on circumventing the democratic process, but the land in question is absolutely worthless to me as a resident of CBad. I never go to the strawberry fields and 90% of the water front is off limits to us anyway. Not to mention the power transmission lines that run right through the middle of it all deter me from ever wanting to walk around there anyway.
Therefore, what is actually being saved?
Development is inevitable and Caruso has a very successful track record with developing premier destinations for shopping and entertainment.
Give him the green light and let’s get on with it. Considering what Caruso went through battling with the uber elite and wealthy up in Santa Barbara, this development should be a cakewalk.
I live just off Cannon Rd and we’re very much opposed to this. With hundreds of new homes coming at Robertson Ranch, and this new monstrosity, the traffic at the Cannon/5 intersection is going be an absolute nightmare. Just put the darn Nordstroms at Westfield and continue with the renovation there.
The Project was approved by Carlsbad voters. Westfield is a dump – Nordstrom is smart to not go in there.
Sorry, I should have been a little more clear. The “we” is my family and more than a few of our neighbors in the heron bay/spyglass community.
As for the approval by voters, correct me if I’m wrong (and i could be) but I thought this only got the necessary number of votes to be considered by the Carlsbad city council and not directly by all Carlsbad residents. Yet. Further, there was an article the other day in the UT Trubune that some of those signatures were obtained my questionable methods.
Point also taken in Westfield being a dump. But with the planned/stalled renovation it doesn’t have to be.
And still nothing I’ve seen addresses any of the traffic issues.
With all due respect to Jim the Realtor, this project has not even gone to the voters, much less approved by them.
The petitions people signed clearly stated that they were signing to put the project to a vote, not necessarily to approve it.
