No Rock-Throwing
Hat tip to kwaping for sending along the Glass Pavilion, in Montecito, CA:
3.49-acre lot
32 cars
6 years to build
$35 million
“An almost entirely glass home, it allows the occupants to be comfortably inside while completely enveloped within nature. Through the use of massive structural steel beams, the home is able to appear weightless, as it hovers above an expansive lawn.” http://montecitopavilion.com/

Looks very kid friendly. At $35M do the cars convey?
Jesus | August 12th, 2010 at 3:31 pmthe Ferrari in glass reminded me of Ferris Bueller

osidebuyer | August 12th, 2010 at 4:00 pmImagine having to wash the windows every time it rains or the sprinklers turn on to get rid of waterspots.
But it would be cool to have all your collector car toys in the living room.
shadash | August 12th, 2010 at 7:18 pmAh, good old Mid-Century/Bauhaus aesthetic.
And yes, you’d need to buy Costco-sized helpings of Windex for that place.
ewhac | August 12th, 2010 at 7:25 pmI recognized the house immediately. Saw it in a local real estate magazine a few months ago. I call Montecito “Celebrity Land”. At $35 mil, it’s one of the most expensive homes there, but nothing in Montecito is cheap.
For those out-of-state, Montecito is right next to Santa Barbara…
Susie | August 12th, 2010 at 7:48 pmOsidebuyer beat me to the Ferris Bueller call!
Sweet house.
The Blur | August 12th, 2010 at 8:52 pmosidebuyer,
I thought of Ferris Bueller too.
Montecito is where Al Gore recently bought a carbon-spewing mansion to release his second chakra when he’s not private jetting around the world.
I’ve been told Montecito was largely developed by Warren Buffett’s right-hand man Charlie Munger, who bought a huge slug of beachfront property and then sold off parcels to his buddies.
W.C. Varones | August 12th, 2010 at 9:00 pmStunning. Although seeing the mega garage underneath (in the later photographs) made the house look like it was suspended over a luxe dealership – gearhead appeal.
Sol | August 12th, 2010 at 10:07 pmWho is going to go around cleaning up all the dead birds at the foot of the foundation?
kompeitou | August 12th, 2010 at 10:15 pmI wonder if I can low-ball them…
Jeeman | August 13th, 2010 at 12:18 amThat is a truly stunning house, but I’d get creeped out at night, thinking that anyone can look in and see everything that’s going on. Yes, the lot is large and private, but still…
Very beautiful.
CA renter | August 13th, 2010 at 2:10 amSeems a bit cold; it looks more like a museum than a house. The right earthquake may render it a giant deck.
Wouldn’t kick it out of bed though.
And to address CA renter’s concern:

Geez, no more walking around in my underwear.
I’ll pass on this one.
Downturn | August 13th, 2010 at 3:48 amProof that you just can’t buy class. Or maybe you can?
That roof is certainly impressive but the whole place looks like an eye/nose surgery in Munich.
For that amount all those cars better be runners but the Ferrari’s oil would ruin the floor. So I bet they are mere shells.
Also I would require it on the beach with a nice right and left break, with private access and a pool. 35 mill don’t get you much these days. Or does it, Jimmy?
Gavin | August 13th, 2010 at 5:37 amI wonder if you could just coat it with Rain-X every year?
Joe | August 13th, 2010 at 7:42 amAwesome house !
bubbleinfofan | August 13th, 2010 at 8:56 amThe bathtub is right in front of the window, just above the driveway to the garage?
And has anyone else noticed there aren’t any curtains or blinds anywhere to be seen including in the master bedroom?
This is definitely a house for exhibitionists!
François Caron | August 13th, 2010 at 9:35 amLOL at comment #9!
To the people concerned about privacy… I used to live in Santa Barbara and drove through Montecito almost daily (school and for pleasure). You can’t see *most* of the homes there from the road, or (I’m guessing) from other homes. The lots are huge and heavily forested. I’m sure nobody can see in this place.
Kwaping | August 13th, 2010 at 10:09 amThis reminds me of the new high-rise condo in downtown San Jose, the Axis. (www.axissanjose.com) The outside walls are floor-to-ceiling glass. Units above about the 5th floor are not for the faint of heart. Fun place to visit, but I don’t think I’d want to live there. I noticed on my last visit that most of the occupants had hung curtains.
Ross | August 13th, 2010 at 3:58 pmCleaning glass is not as low cost as you would imagine.
I was talking with a guy who lived on Emerald Bay Drive in Laguna Beach. His bill for window cleaning (due to wind, waves, sand) was multiple thousands per month.

Not a standard 3/2, 1,800 sf house, I take it?
CA renter | August 15th, 2010 at 12:50 amI like it. However, I would I would rather have a classic Spanish style home and they have some good ones up there.
