Protest Beer

I mentioned towards the end of the 100+ comment post last week about getting together for a beer at Pizza Port in Carlsbad tonight, but I can’t make it.

But I’d like to regroup anyway.  I’m afraid that if we were to load up on sharkbite red ale and get crazy, it could digress into going door to door with shadash and throwing freeloaders out of their house!

Instead, I want to find a way to protest about what the government is doing.

I’m open to your ideas, but I’m thinking we should write a song of protest.  We’d meet up at Pizza Port in the next week or two, drink a few beers to make us sound better, and then sing it on camera.  Then put it on youtube, send it to government officials, and boom – change the world.

What do you think?

Have any verses you like to contribute?

  1. You don’t want to hear me sing. The sound you get when I sing is very similar to the sound a cat makes when you step on its tail.

  2. hehe ;-)

  3. “Money For Nothing” by Dire Straits might make a good basis for a protest song. Here’s an example:

  4. Something fun to do is give everyone a name tag that they can put their nick and favorite quote on.

    Things like…

    Hi I’m
    Shadash

    Quote
“Deadbeats are ruining America! Thanks but no thanks Obama. Keep the change.”

  5. Are we protesting that the stimulus isn’t big enough? I’m in then….

  6. I like Flash Banking.

  7. Here’s one I wrote last summer (might have to be a Deadhead to appreciate it):

Must be getting ugly, the Fed keeps cutting rates
Make my love a morning coffee, milk’s six dollars
Global shortage of wheat and rice, buy a bread loaf, curse the price
Mortgage brokers’ wrists are sliced, but its all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive

You own two condos, don’t pout, cut your price and get out
Once you get the gist of it, its all right
Farewell McMansion, hello shack, Bernanke must be smoking crack
Every Greenspan’s bubble’s got a touch of black
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive

Its a lesson to me, the flippers and Mozilos and the thieves
The orange midget we all think of, I hope he gets some prison love

I know the mortgage is in arrears, Grandma eats her Alpo in tears
It’s even worse than it appears, but it’s all right

Corn is used for gasoline, inflation’s running in the teens
The Bear Stearns bailout was obscene, but it’s all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive

The tan is on the man it fits, dumped his stock ‘fore the shit hit
Whistle through your teeth and spit, but it’s all right

Oh well a touch of black, lets you know the dollar’s whacked,
Bernanke must be smoking crack, but it’s all right
I will get by, I will get by, I will get by, I will survive

Its a lesson to me, the Conrads and the Dodds and Barney
The FOAs do what they’re told, the Congressmen are bought and sold

  8. The only way to use beer to make my singing sound better is to pour it into the listeners.

  9. I was so looking forward to giving back to society tonight at Pizza Port. I have an extra $25 stimulus payment added to my unemployment benefits – good enough for a pitcher of Sharkbite and then some.

  10. I love pizza port – can you do it at solana though?

  11. I’ve got one. Cut your withholding to the minimum allowable levels. Might as well make sure they don’t get your money until next April.

As for Pizza Port, I love their beer, but I’m up in OC, so heading down to Carlsbad is a rarity for me… All I need to do is convince my wife to move down there, though, and I’m set!

  12. Lots of people have this idea right now..

  13. Stephen,

I understand the folks that want to have actual protests out in public… But hey, some of us are trying to make a living, and can’t just head out to protest on a Wednesday. We only get so much vacation, ya know?

The withholding change has a few major advantages:

    1) You don’t have to leave the office.
    2) It’s a protest you can keep up year-round.
    3) It actually hits the feds where it hurts – the pocketbook.

#3 is the key… You want to hold a public protest? Nobody in Washington cares. You reduce the flow of dollars into their hands? They’ll take notice RATHER quickly.

For you Pizza Port fans, any homebrewers among you?

  14. I second the motion on the Solana Pizza Port.

  15. I vote for SB, but I betcha Jim is closer to Carlsbad. Why I was just at Solana Beach Pizza Port last week – the beer is good =P

  16. I’ve never been to the PP in Solana Beach! I better get cracking on that song – it’ll be short and sweet, I promise.

Effect of a protest day? It’s better than nothing, but this is the microwave society – we want instant gratification. A protest day will feel good for a few hours, but the politicians know they wear off quick.

  17. Jim,

But hey, a beer-related protest day may feel good for a few hours but may not wear off until sometime the next morning :-)

The PP in Carlsbad is the best of the three. In my view, San Clemente is 2nd, with Solana Beach in 3rd… Solana may be the original, but it’s also the smallest.

  18. I’m in. I will sing for my supper.

Solana is pretty small, but I’d vote for it any way because of convenience.

  19. Needs a few more beers.
    With apologies to Queen.

Mr. President, keep the change please
Payin’ on my mortgage and now my neighbor’s place
    Still the banks implode
    The Bailout showed
You’re kicking the can further down the road

NO more No more TAX HIKE!
NO more No more TAX HIKE!

  20. Does it have to be original? Just aimed at CA Tax hikes? Or would venting aimed at treasury be on the table?

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
Bailing out Bankers is bad for wealth!

  21. Something on these lines perhaps?

  22. I’m with Brad. Solana is fun, but it’s too small for any large group. Given 1-2 days notice, I’ll be there.

  23. Jim,

This teaparty GOP nonsense just made me delete the bookmark on this page. So long, brother, you and the rest of the John Galts can talk among yourselves.
