The Good Old Days
Peter Hong was in town yesterday.
To give him a sampling of the local Carlsbad market, we looked at this retro-1980′s classic, a 6,500 square footer at the top of the hill in La Costa:

Beautiful house. I like the 80′s design elements.
shadash | February 26th, 2009 at 10:18 amFreakin’ BPD (Boston) used to ride horses into the lobby. You left coast wennies don’ know nuttin’ ’bout good 80′s punk.
This is a nice house. Good bones, rational floorplan. You don’t have to touch the kitchen. I disagree that it would take a mil to whip this puppy into shape. I admit you are going to wear out a few tile chisels but what was a hyper luxo item in the 80s is nothing today. Less than $10k for even the big orgy bathroom. Seriously, surfaces have gotten much, much cheaper. The entire 2nd floor can be underfloored and engineered wood resurfaced for less than $20k. $5-8k for a refresh of the backyard.
Oh and I just wish you had dwelled in the master closet a bit longer. That “second” almost hidden room is perfect for any number of hobbies.

Jim the Realtor | February 26th, 2009 at 10:49 amI guess my tastes haven’t changed much in the past 20-30 years, but I’m with Rob on this. I would need to find a way to get gas to that island cooktop and the wife would need an elevator to get upstairs, but oherwise redo the bathroom tiles, refinish or replace worn flooring, repaint and remove some of the more outdated built-ins and we’d be home.
GeneK | February 26th, 2009 at 11:07 amThat house screams coke party..
4s Renter | February 26th, 2009 at 11:30 amMy mosh pit would beat up your mosh pit….
We didn’t do no weenie “mosh pits.” The fraternity basement with either the rugby or hockey team on the doors was more our style.
… and we’d be home.
I might spring for a couple indulgences. Epoxy floor in the garage along with a faux carriage door. Black bottom the pool for seal, inspect, repair and energy purposes. Paver the driveway. Your comment about a lift is well taken. Our genial host no matter how mild his nusical tastes has said many times that rambling ranches are preferred. Oh, and those freaking fauw stome columns at the entrance. Screams fake to me. Gone.
Rob Dawg | February 26th, 2009 at 11:35 amIn time I might get around to removing that whole column-and-trellis thing in front. But until I do, I could probably soften their appearance with some fast-growing trailing vines or something.
We prefer single-story as well (it’s what we bought), but if the second story is the only way to get the ocean view, we could probably learn to live with it…
GeneK | February 26th, 2009 at 11:59 amI think we’re all so used to seeing horror-story REOS in these videos, that any halfway-decent home is going to look outstanding. Heck, I would live in that place without changing anything, if I had to (and got a good enough price).
Kwaping | February 26th, 2009 at 12:08 pmGeneK,
Rob Dawg | February 26th, 2009 at 12:23 pmThe second floor also affords a bit of privacy from above and something I call positional dominance. That last is a bit weird but JtR has it. I have a bit as well. At least when I crank the Dead Kennedy’s the ranches across the valley don’t call the cops. Ask Jim what happened to the pics from his “civil disturbance” last month.
After a brief respite over the last couple of months, we’re back on the sheriff helicopter’s regular route.
When they shine their spotlight on me, I always give them a salute.
Jim the Realtor | February 26th, 2009 at 12:27 pm“The second floor also affords a bit of privacy from above and something I call positional dominance.”
Nice to have if the houses are close enough together to need it (couldn’t really tell from the video). We definitely don’t have any kind of “positional dominance” over any of our neighbors, but having enough space and trees between the houses that none of us can see into each others’ windows ensures that there’s nobody “above” to need any privacy from. Except the helicopters, that is. Are those all the sheriff, or is there someone else overflying the CSUSM/Coronado/Walnut Hills area of San Marcos?
GeneK | February 26th, 2009 at 1:12 pmX, saw them at the Bacchanal 4 times…down in Kearny Mesa in the 80′s. Anyone else been there? Dumpy strip mall bar…but they got all the best alt bands for years…Ramones, Devo, Psych Furs, B-52′s,Thomas Dolby, Joe Jackson, Men w/o Hats, Was not Was, Beastie Boys(debut tour featuring their first single-Cookie Puss)Timbuk3 and lots more I cant think of 25 years later.
Was a great haunt and I lived 2 miles away by Mesa College, Ashford Street, my first condo I ever bought in SD area…cost me 48k in ’84, $444.00 a month payments. Those were the days. I had the easiest phone number to remember in the world for all my friends to call long distance 1 619 565 619 1. 48 in 84 for 444 a month. It all had symmetry didn’t it then. Sold it in 88 and moved to a little town that no one wanted to live in…CARLSBAD! Yes, NO ONE wanted to live that REMOTE in 88! Too far north!
doughboy | February 26th, 2009 at 1:34 pmI saw X at the Bacchanal, and loved seeing the Beat Farmers there too.
The ceiling was so low that Country Dick could hold onto it while doing his drunken ballet from tabletop to tabletop.
Jim the Realtor | February 26th, 2009 at 1:37 pmJim, how far down-market do the panic rooms start?
Johan Larson | February 26th, 2009 at 1:48 pmI don’t understand that kitchen.
If you can afford a place that posh you can afford a cook. And that cook would be best served by a kitchen that’s a bit more industrial and hence located out of the way.
And the other hand, if this kitchen is for a hobby-chef, wouldn’t something a bit smaller and manageable be in order?
Johan Larson | February 26th, 2009 at 1:57 pmDid you take it down? It now says:
“We’re sorry, this video is no longer available.”
Stephen Waits | February 26th, 2009 at 2:05 pmAnyone here remember X’s lunchtime concert at Katella High School circa 1980? Someone in the student government managed to get past the administration by portraying X as an innocuous band. The PR included flooding the O.C. with flyers and the school was mobbed. Enter the Anaheim police in full riot gear. Those were the days.
no_techie | February 26th, 2009 at 2:10 pmI’ve seen a lot of big, expensive houses built in the past 15 years or so that have “showplace kitchens” that are really just staging places for catered parties. The non-cooking owners eat out and order in a lot, and there’s often a wet bar somewhere in the family room or master bedroom with space for a mini-fridge/freezer, big, expensive coffee/espresso machine and microwave that the owners use when they absolutely, positively have to do for themselves.
GeneK | February 26th, 2009 at 2:17 pmBefore I came to SD county I was from WI. Our version of X was the Violent Femmes. They were the band that filled the mosh pits of Madison and Milwaukee bars. Loved that stuff. That Katella HS event must have been epic! Sorry to side track the bubbleinfo crows with music. But for those of us that experienced the 80′s music scene with similar tastes, this all is too good to ignore!
doughboy | February 26th, 2009 at 2:25 pmIf anyone wants to send Exene fan mail:

Would she be cheered or depressed to find out she’s being discussed on a real estate blog ?
I say it’s pretty punk rock.
Peter Hong | February 26th, 2009 at 3:01 pmDoughboy–
I managed to see “The Femmes” in 1984 at SDSU Montezuma Hall–What a show!
Local Boy | February 26th, 2009 at 4:05 pmThe Beat is playing at Belly Up Fir and Sat $20-
Local Boy | February 26th, 2009 at 4:09 pmBest part: Hef and the Bunnies. Except the chuckle belies your desire to be Hef–you know you want that house!
lgs | February 26th, 2009 at 4:59 pmAnyone here remember X’s lunchtime concert at Katella High School circa 1980?
I remember it, but did not see it. Saw them many times though in various other venues. Best live band of the era for me (Minutemen were probably better, I never saw them live).
The black tile from those days had one clear purpose: white powder is very visible on a smooth black surface.
Blissful Ignoramus | February 26th, 2009 at 6:39 pmI wouldn’t change a thing in that house except add a stripper pole to the mirrored bathroom and ask Pablo Escobar to be my roommate.
mybleachhouse | February 26th, 2009 at 7:42 pmDammit, don’t be a revisionist. We didn’t call them “mosh pits” in LA back then.
Cornelius | February 26th, 2009 at 11:31 pmIn other news… I just read that Mr. McMillan “is a member of Omega Tau Rho, honorary real estate society.” I heard they’re thinking of changing it to Rho Epsilon Omega.
Kwaping | February 27th, 2009 at 8:57 amSorry, the above comment was meant for the “Look Out Now” post.
Kwaping | February 27th, 2009 at 8:58 amI saw the X at the Catalyst in about 1983 or so. My ears were still ringing the next day. The girl I was with practically got bowled over by this giant punk guy who was flinging himself around. Exene did some things with a beer bottle that I can’t describe on a family blog — did she do that at all her concerts? Good times.
Dwip | February 28th, 2009 at 12:11 amThank you, Dwip for, holding back–my imagination was more than I wanted to see on that comment!
shoppingaround | February 28th, 2009 at 4:46 amI’m not sure X ever was supposed to play at Katella. I know that in my senior year, 1981, Black Flag was supposed to play under a phony name, but that got squashed by the administration, and that DID prompt a riot, and Anaheim P.D. did show up in riot gear.
