The seller of this oceanfront lot paid $2,500,000 in 2004 – is oceanfront immune?

    If this is truly *the last* oceanfront lot in all of Carlsbad, then it probably stands in a category of its own apart from the rest of “the market.”

    Hubris and narrowmindedness.

    I’d rather live on the cliffs up above, personally. I could still find something more suited to my tastes in LaJolla with a house on it.

  4. I probably could too, but there seems to be something about “the last one” of anything that generates an inexplicable increase in interest and perceived value. That’s why the builders of that “Icon” high-rise in SD are staging a “one day event” and trying to make it look as if they’re selling out “the last” of their units.

  5. Are people as eager to take ‘the last’ brownie or cookie from a tray that had been picked over? I personally like having a variety of options, which aren’t present when dealing with unique items. That being stated, I’m sure someone will buy into the nonsense.

    Like Chuck said, I’d take something in the jewel, although not on the cliffs. $2.5 mil buys a pretty damn nice house there.

    Strangely enough, tt always seems to me that anytime I throw a party people seem to gravitate towards the things that are closer to running out.

  8. GeneK, that’s always been true for me until the last scraps. We devoured a whole tray of chicken in 40 minutes but there was one piece left from then on.

  9. BTW, $2.5 doesn’t buy all that much in LJ. Our rental is on the market for more than that and I am itching to get out of here because the place is so supremely crappy.

  10. Hibiscus, what makes LJ so not to your taste? What are you paying in rent?

  11. Won’t an empty lot have to go through MANY more approval hoops (California Coastal Commission, etc.) than doing the “upgrade/teardown” manueuver of leaving a few original walls to a scraper so you can bypass them? Used to take years to get approvals on beach properties–does it still?

  13. The buyer on this one is one of Madoff’s relatives. They just found out the check wasn’t mailed so the deal fell through….

  14. La Jolla is a pain for transportation, IMHO. Just two clogged roads to get in or out of LJ proper. It’s great, though, if you work in LJ or are retired and can swan around Prospect during the day. Or if you’re big on art galleries that have paintings of pink-wearing golfers.
