Tax Dollars At Work
Given the neighborhood (around the corner from my listing on Calle Mariposa, listed for $147,900), this patch of grass looks impressive – until you jump out of your car and realize it’s fake.
The City of Oceanside has been installing artificial turf thoughout this area, but who knows if it was to improve the look, or lower the maintenance. I’m not sure they’re getting much of either – this photo was taken about 100 yards down the street:

A new meaning to the word "astroturfing"
ucodegen | August 7th, 2008 at 1:53 amYou can polish a turd, but its still a turd.
loharp | August 7th, 2008 at 3:44 amI’ve noticed apartment buildings up by where I live (los angeles) using artificial grass. It looks very cheap and tacky, I’m sure there will be an uproar about it here eventually. These Westwood residents can be an uppity bunch.
Genius | August 7th, 2008 at 7:23 amGreat news for Oside, apparently the violent gang bangers have been all been jailed and/or deported and now they have the time and money to address the pressing issue of dead grass.
John | August 7th, 2008 at 7:41 amI think it’s a great idea to try to get rid of grass in places where nobody walks on it in the first place. After all, this is a desert – anybody remember?
Artificial turf is obviously not the best answer, it looks tacky and eventually just breaks down into polluting plastic stuff. But I’ve seen some great-looking desertscapes in industrial parks. I’d say the city of O-side at least deserves recognition for effort.
Simone | August 7th, 2008 at 3:12 pmThey’re looking ahead to what’s likely to happen with water prices. Our population will keep growing, yet the Colorado River (1/2 our water supply) is completely allocated. We’re not going to get any more water from there. We get another 1/3 from Northern California, but that judge (forget his name) has ordered a shutdown in the pumps that suck the water out of the Delta in order to deliver it here. Apparently those pumps chew up some endangered fish. Just today the CA coastal commission approved a big desalination plant in Carlsbad, but that water will cost twice as much as what we have now. I agree that the decayed astroturf looks ugly, but I think Oceanside is smart to start looking for alternatives to grass for medians and sidewalk borders.
Dwip | August 7th, 2008 at 3:57 pmThat looks nice….I dunno I think it’s kind of fitting. Fake grass, fake wealth, fake fake fake.
Hmmm. Not much of a comment sorry.
